About the CalOHII Health Information Policy Standards (HIPS) Division

The HIPS Division facilitates and oversees the collaborative development of health information privacy and security policies for the exchange of health information. The HIPS Division is the primary resource for state entities on health information privacy and security and for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountably Act (HIPAA). The HIPS Division works collaboratively with the CalOHII eHealth Division and numerous other Stakeholders in the development of policies and procedures that are consistent with state and federal laws and best practices, to ensure a trusted environment for the exchange of health information. Efforts include the management of health information exchange demonstration projects that test policies and rules to better inform the state and healthcare stakeholders while the statewide health information exchange infrastructure is being defined; facilitating health information Privacy and Security Steering Teams as they work to bring together and simplify the integration of HIPAA and numerous health information privacy and security state laws; and facilitating patient and provider engagement and education, including the development of the Privacy 360 informational webpage.
